King and his ministers
On one occasion the king asked one of his ministers. What would happen if the treasury were emptied overnight and poverty befalls in my kingdom?
The minister replied: I would offer my lands to Your Majesty to help your kingdom.
The king was satisfied by the answer, then turned to his second minister, to whom he asked the same question.
He gave a similar answer: I would sell my palaces and use all my possessions to help Your Majesty’s treasury. The king rejoiced, then asked his third minister the same.
He replied: I live in a simple house with my family. I have no assets to offer. I would do my duties as before.
The king was outraged at the response. What an impudence, he said!
And the minister: my answer is not impudent, but the ministers' answer was that, whom you asked before me. If your treasury will be emptied the reason is that they have huge property and palaces.
